About the internship

RECLAIM is competing for funding from the Rank Foundation to be able to offer a 12 month internship which will be paid the Living Wage. The intern will become part of the Rank Time to Shine network, as well as having the chance to be mentored through the programme and to take part in Action Learning.


RECLAIM is an innovative and award-winning charity for young working class people who are ready to lead their communities. We support young people to shed stigma and challenge the status quo; and focus on leadership that is bold, thinks critically and speaks out, for the collective good of our community and society. We work towards a society in which working class young people are positively seen, authentically heard and can lead meaningful social change.

RECLAIM has an outstanding track-record of delivering successful, topical, thought-provoking youth-led programmes and campaigns. We support our young people as activists and work hard to ensure that they have the tools needed to be effective changemakers – seeking out long term solutions to society’s thorniest problems.

This is a new and exciting role in a rapidly growing and pioneering organisation. Over the next three years, we will deliver programmes in new locations, and widen our reach through new campaigns and projects, working to become a national organisation. As our organisation grows, we are looking to develop a small communications team who are able to effectively communicate our messages and amplify the voices of our young people.

Job Purpose:

This role will be the first point of contact for all communications – from managing media requests to looking after our Twitter feed. This will include working with traditional media, as well as digital and social media, managing our online presence and contributing to the development of a new communications strategy for the organisation. The role will ensure that we maintain a strong brand identity, build our reputation and deliver effective campaigns and marketing. 

About you:

The ideal candidate will have some previous experience, be engaged in issues of social change, be aligned with RECLAIM’s values and able to passionately advocate for young people’s voices to be heard in corridors of power. 

We are looking for a self-starter who has a critical and inquisitive mind and who strongly aligns with our values and vision. The ideal candidate is a great communicator, able to work with a small but busy team, and who can respond quickly to new issues or ideas.

The successful candidate will possess exceptional written and verbal communication skills and be highly organised, with the ability to manage a wide range of tasks within tight deadlines.  You will be able to maintain timely contact with numerous external contacts and manage day-to-day administration while also writing engaging content in a range of formats. This is an ideal role for an enthusiastic and dedicated person looking to make their first steps in to charity communications within this innovative organization.

  • News aware - an interest and general knowledge with current affairs
  • IT literate; able to use range of Microsoft packages (Word, Excel) and email tools

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities:

Social Media and Website

  • Managing RECLAIM’s twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, and other social media accounts
  • Producing analytics reports to check strategy and refine communications plans
  • Ensuring website is regularly updated, particularly homepage and analytics for donations
  • Producing regular analytic reports to understand site visitors’ user journey
  • Overseeing blogs, proofing and uploading submissions from team and young people, writing short blogs where necessary

Media management

  • First point of contact for media professionals and journalists; triaging media requests and briefing relevant staff members
  • Maintaining media list and records of all communications opportunities
  • Scoping opportunities for media coverage and pitching to journalists, proactively identifying new contacts
  • Supporting staff to prepare for media appearances
  • Writing quick turnaround response pieces for media


  • Identify events and other opportunities to publicise the organisation and our campaigns
  • Support the co-ordination of our events and publicity


  • Responsible for initial proofing and development of marketing materials
  • Maintaining records of all materials produced; ensuring that all marketing is up to date;
  • Identifying and developing new marketing materials, including flyers, brochures etc

Communications and Brand

  • Supporting the development and implementation of a new communications strategy and plan, working alongside the Strategic Development Manager;
  • Managing a communications/events calendar across the organisation, ensuring that we have sufficient lead time to make public facing work successful
  • Build an understanding our audiences and how to convert interest (e.g. on social media) in to active support/donations
  • Drafting and revising as appropriate key messaging documents for staff
  • Supporting development of clear brand guidelines and ensuring staff are able to follow these
  • Support to campaigns planning as required

General Requirements:

  • Maintain an up to date knowledge of current activities in the organisation;
  • To abide by all guidelines, procedures and policies provided by the organisation, including Safeguarding, Data Protection Legislation, and other relevant codes of practice;
  • To act as an ambassador for RECLAIM at all times, actively promoting/modelling its core vision, mission and values both internally and externally;
  • To be a positive and active team player across the organisation;
  • To actively share knowledge and skills with the RECLAIM team;
  • Commitment to own development and that of the organisation and staff team;
  • Commitment to attendance and contribution to team meetings and 1:1s;
  • To take part in such working groups and committees as might from time to time be required for the fulfilment of departmental or company aims;
  • Identify issues and take timely remedial action where required

Key Deliverables:

  • Submit weekly progress updates on all your activities to your manager;
  • Monthly analytics of social media and website;
  • Monthly media monitoring updates.
