Trustees x 3

(one with financial expertise, applications from young people especially welcomed)

Role type: Voluntary, expenses paid.  For example this may be for travel, care for dependents, or anything which is reasonably needed to participate.

Location: Can be based anywhere, with the expectation of attending at least one meeting in person once a year in Manchester (expenses paid).

Time commitment

All trustees: Trustees attend four meetings a year (usually half days, online).  Time is required to review papers ahead of these meetings.

If issues arise between board meetings, some additional time may be needed, for example for phone calls, emails, or ad hoc meetings.

We appreciate that trustees are giving their time in addition to their other responsibilities, so where possible we agree timescales for involvement in activities well in advance, and work flexibly.

Trustee with financial expertise: In addition to the above, this trustee will liaise with the Chair, CEO, and accountants ahead of end-of-year financial reporting, and at other times in the year as needed.

Application process

To apply, fill in this form with your details and answering the following questions:

  • Why would you like to join the board of RECLAIM?

  • What skills / experience would you bring to the board?

We’ll then be in touch to explain the next steps in the process.

To arrange an informal conversation about joining the board, please email info@reclaimproject.org.uk.

If you need to apply using a different format, please contact us to discuss what works for you.

About RECLAIM

RECLAIM is a bold charity that is committed to building a fair and just world for and with all working-class young people. We build knowledge, power, community and solidarity to campaign on the issues that affect them the most. We do this in three ways:

  • Community - Creating spaces that grow a sense of belonging and solidarity.

  • Campaigns - Challenging institutions, systems and structures.

  • Consultancy - Supporting organisations to become class-inclusive.

Our changemaking work includes:

We supported young people to successfully campaign for free bus travel for all 16-18 year olds across Greater Manchester. A policy which now benefits 40,000 young people, making 250,000 free journeys per week and saving them and their families an average of over £500 per young person per year.

We helped young people highlight and challenge the increasing use of violent and dehumanising language in politics. The campaign gained widespread media coverage and resulted in new commitments from the Speaker, Prime Minister and Leader of the Opposition.

Young people we support were at the forefront of highlighting the impact of COVID19 on working-class communities and demanding better recognition of the essential workers keeping the country going during lockdown.

As a trustee, you will:

  • Attend a minimum of four regular board meetings a year (usually four half day meetings, online), reviewing and commenting on papers in advance of these meetings.

  • Support and develop organisational strategy.

  • Provide oversight of the organisation’s finances and fundraising strategy.

  • Provide oversight in areas such as risk, HR, safeguarding and legal compliance.

  • Provide support for the CEO (specific line management is delegated to the Chair).

  • Support with other tasks as may be needed, e.g. recruitment of trustees, recruitment of key staff members, additional specific pieces of work.

  • Act as an ambassador for RECLAIM.

What we’re looking for:

We’re currently looking for three trustees to join the board.  We’re open to the skills and experience that these new trustees will bring, but are specifically looking for one person to join with finance experience, who can take the lead on the board’s financial oversight.  We always very much welcome applications from young people (aged 16 or older).

Here are the values, skills and experiences we look to fill across the whole trustee board. You don’t need to have all of these to be able to apply.

  • A strong belief in the potential of working-class young people to be leaders of change.

  • Experience of being part of a working-class community.

  • Experience of being a trustee or non-executive director.

  • Experience either on the board or staff team of a charity a similar size to RECLAIM.

  • Experience of financial oversight / management.

  • Experience of risk management.

  • Experience of safeguarding processes and procedures.

  • Understanding of inclusion, diversity & intersectionality

  • Experience of fundraising.

  • Legal expertise (charity, company, employment, health and safety etc).

  • Experience in campaigning / creating change.

  • Experience of working with young people to create change.

An introduction from our Chair, Kay Polley

Hello, I am delighted that you’re considering becoming a trustee of RECLAIM.  You’ll be joining at an exciting point, as we launch a new strategy and look to take the next steps for the organisation.

The trustee board provides leadership for the organisation, working collaboratively with our CEO and staff team to make sure we have ambitious plans in place and a secure future ahead of us.  In recent years both the challenges for working-class communities and the pressures on small charities have increased hugely.  Our work is difficult, but needed more than ever.

I became a RECLAIM trustee 18 months ago, and have been delighted to have become part of such a welcoming and supportive board.  I am constantly impressed by the dedication of my fellow trustees, and am now looking forward to how our small team will change and grow as we welcome new board members.

If you’re not sure whether you’re the right person for this role please get in touch for a conversation.  We’re committed to providing a thorough induction, training and support to anyone who joins the board, especially if this is your first governance role.  We hope that at RECLAIM you’ll find you can have a meaningful impact for organisation and working-class young people, whilst at the same time learning lots and developing your own skills.

We’ve listed some of the skills we’re looking for, but the board works together as a team, so you don’t need to be able to cover all of them yourself.  The most important thing is that you share RECLAIM’s values, you can work collaboratively together with others, and you’re committed to using your skills to make sure RECLAIM continues to thrive.
